President’s Report
This year has seen the South Kyme Women’s Institute flourish under the new committee, with lots of help from the existing members, into a vibrant and exciting group with a large intake of new members. Although at the beginning it has been difficult to interact as we would have liked due to the Covid Pandemic the WI has created a space for women of the village to come together, not only to develop new skills but also to form new friendships.
The first evening held by the new committee was the Cocktail and Mocktail Night, on 9 September 2021. The committee chose 3 cocktails and 3 mocktails for members to enjoy - non-alcoholic were - Blueberry Mojito, Shirley Ginger and Berry Burlesque. Alcoholic ones were - Long & Leggy, Classic Mojito and Pinky & Perky. We were given the opportunity to create our own drinks using lots of different equipment under the watchful eye of a few experienced mixologists. Throughout the evening members enjoyed a selection of party style food and entertainment was provided by Melissa with an alcohol themed quiz. The evening was a huge success and as thoroughly enjoyed by those who attended.
The October meeting brought us our evening of Pumpkin Carving where we gathered together to show off our skills and Mary was crowned champion of the pumpkin carving, myself and Sarah discovered maybe we should avoid sharp objects. The evening was rounded off by enjoying a selection of autumn soups and breads all crafted by our members.
Our November meeting was hosted by Jessica who taught members How to craft marzipan fruits and present them in beautiful boxes with individual bows that Sue Lock kindly showed us how to make. This meeting gave us chance to get into the festive spirit before our Christmas meal that this year was held at the village pub where we gathered together to enjoy a delightful three course meal and took part in a secret Santa.
Our next meeting was the traditional puddings evening in January where we all had the opportunity to showcase our baking skills and have a good catch up after not seeing one another over the festive period.
From an evening of puddings, we moved onto our February meeting, hosted by our own Carole Chapman who educated us about Spotting scams and fraud protection. This gave us the opportunity to ask questions and learn tools to prevent us falling foul of scammers.
The final meeting was our Games night that sadly had a very small turn out due to Covid etc, however, the members who did manage to attend enjoyed a selection of traditional and modern games, where we saw some members competitive spirit's surface, perhaps helped along by the prosecco.
Although this year so far has been a truly unusual one with the Covid pandemic, it has seen the WI become a more prominent feature in the community as it helped support many events within the village including making and selling cakes at the village ‘Coming Out’ party; the chine supper, and also helping with the preparation for the Queen's Jubilee celebrations.
It’s been a real pleasure to watch the South Kyme WI develop and expand due the incredible support of the committee members and the WI members themselves, no doubt this year we can continue to grow in numbers and also forge new lifelong friendships together.
